An intense workout is a great feeling, and it’s a great thing to do for your body. However, without proper hydration, you can end up doing a lot more damage than good. The importance of staying hydrated while exercising can’t be stressed enough, but what’s the most effective way of doing that?

Water has been the obvious choice for humans and most other animals, but water isn’t the only hydration option available to us anymore. The development of sports drinks using electrolytes suggests that these beverages may be an even more effective way of keeping yourself hydrated. This leaves people wondering, which we should be using for hydration: drinking water or Electrolyte Infused Sports drinks?

The labels on the containers swear they’re good for you, but what does everything on that bottle actually mean the drink is doing for you? The electrolytes commonly found in sports drinks contain an abundance of ions which are used to make you more electrically conductive. Your body loses electrolytes while you sweat, along with potassium salts and water. Sports drinks contain all three of these, but there are some questions as to whether or not they’re needed. While exercising your body uses a lot of reserves in the body to replace what is lost through sweat. So while you do lose electrolytes while working out, you may not need to replace them as quickly to keep your body healthy.

Water is slowly absorbed through the stomach, but even that slow speed seems to be sufficient to keep your body in good condition while exercising, albeit with diminishing returns over time. It’s much more important to be as hydrated as possible before you start working out instead of relying on a boost later on during your routine.

Do you need to be drinking Electrolyte Infused Sports drinks daily for proper hydration? No, not unless you’re an athlete or in a position where you lose a substantial amount of sweat and electrolytes on a daily basis.

There is a point where your body has lost so many electrolytes that a boost is necessary. Doctors place this time at around 3 hours of intense working out. After such an activity, it would be appropriate to boost your water drinking with just such an Electrolyte Infused Sports Drink. You can get electrolytes from more than Sports Drinks: in spite of their bold claims, electrolytes are commonly found in non-sports drinks such as juice and milk. You can also get a healthy dose of electrolytes from eating fruits and vegetables.

Are all sports drinks created equal?

Although there is obvious bias towards using water, you may prefer the taste of some sports drinks or regularly engage in an intense workout. Electrolyte Infused Sports Drinks may be a part of your process: there are some important things to keep in mind when looking for an electrolyte-infused beverage though.

A lot of sports drinks are filled with sugar, which can be a lot of empty calories while working out. Your body does make use of the sugar for a quick boost, but your daily dose of sugar should only be about 40 grams. Many sports drinks contain 50 or more grams of sugar, which is way more than your body needs. If you’re exercising to lose weight, sports drinks can outdo a lot of what you’re trying to accomplish.

One way to offset this is to mix your sports drink with water. Filling half a container with water and the other with your sports drink will effectively cut the sugar content in half. This will also reduce the number of electrolytes you get, but it’s still more effective than drinking water alone. It’s also a quick solution to using a healthier electrolyte-laden drink when you may not have time to make your own.

Of course, if those aren’t appetizing, there are a lot of recipes online for homemade electrolyte drinks. Some of them can be quite tasty, and are relatively easy to make with no need for special ingredients outside of what you can find at a grocery store.

Moral of the story? Stay hydrated!

Remember that hydration is incredibly vital while working out. Even more important than whether it’s water or a sports drink, is that you always remember to stay hydrated. Your body does a great job of keeping your levels even for the most part, but those undergoing intense workouts such as training for a marathon or sporting event may be losing valuable chemical not as quickly replenished with water.

For everyone else who need only worry about staying hydrated during an hour-long work out at the gym, try to get as hydrated with water as possible before starting, and remember that water will probably be an effective way of staying hydrated during your workout as well. If you find yourself feeling particularly sluggish after a workout or excursion, feel free to boost your water intake with a favorite flavor of Electrolyte Infused Sports Drink!

Getting a cold drink from the garden hose on a hot summer’s day might strike a chord of nostalgia in some people’s minds. It used to be the norm and you may hear people claiming they used to drink from the garden hose and they turned out just fine. However, you shouldn’t drink water from your garden hose anymore. Below, we detail a few reasons why.

Regulations and Awareness

“We used to do it all the time!” Isn’t a good reason to keep doing things. Doctors used to smoke in their exam rooms and people used to drive without seat belts. It’s true that people used to drink from the garden hose all the time however water out of the garden hose was different when they were growing up.

The FDA regulates water to help keep the public healthy and water from the garden hose just doesn’t make the cut anymore.

Cleanliness is an Issue

First of all, there are plenty of critters  and bacteria that can make camp in your garden hose since it lives outside or in a garage or shed all the time. Waterborne bacterial infections can be easily transmitted through the water flow of your hose. Water from the hose may also contain chemicals that may not otherwise be present in tap water or bottled water. Your hose itself is made up of plastics and heavy metals that should never be ingested. Small pieces of debris from the hose are easily dislodged and could end up making you very sick over time. The pipes that carry water to your hoses aren’t necessarily up to code for drinking water and can also carry toxins and other dangerous elements.

Conclusion

It might be convenient on a hot day to take a sip from the hose but think twice before indulging in this nostalgic activity. Contact us today to get Silver Springs water delivered to your home so you have clean, fresh water at your fingertips all summer long!

Let’s start with the basics – What is Alkaline Water?

There is one primary difference between tap water and Alkaline water, and that is that Alkaline water has less acidity. It is called Alkaline because it contains the following metal compounds: Calcium, Silica, Potassium, Magnesium, and Bicarbonate.

You can achieve Alkaline water via two methods. The first – and natural method – is through water that has passed over rocks and picked up minerals before being bottled. The second method is Electrolysis: in which an ionizer will raise the pH level of regular tap water to make it more alkaline.

Alkaline water has been recommended to people who experience severe acidity as it can help to neutralize the acid in the body. Studies have shown that drinking certain Alkaline waters can have a positive effect on acid reflux. The study is made available by the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health.

Another study has shown that drinking Alkaline water after a workout can help blood flow more efficiently through the body and deliver oxygen more effectively. The study is made available by the BMC.

Should you be drinking Alkaline Water?

It is widely accepted as safe to drink Alkaline water as it contains natural minerals, and many professionals say it’s a welcome addition to your normal water intake for a healthy lifestyle.

Medical professionals do warn against drinking too much Alkaline water and driving up the pH in the body too high – especially if you experience an underactive parathyroid gland – as this can result in a condition known as Alkalosis that causes confusion, nausea, vomiting, and tremors.

Slimming can be an arduous process. Hunger pangs can strike at any time, and wherever you go, you’re likely to encounter mouth-watering temptations. A simple solution is to establish a routine. This may be tough going at first, but once your body has adjusted and the routine has become second nature, those challenges to your willpower will shrink to manageable levels or even disappear. As well as planning your food intake, you’ll need to make a few rules for related matters, such as meal times, grocery shopping, social life and exercise. By adjusting your lifestyle habits, you can ensure a joined-up system that works. Here are some tips for getting started.

Eating patterns

Allow yourself three meals a day, so there’s always one on the horizon, and set precise times for each one (or as precise as possible), so your metabolism can adjust accordingly. Then plan your diet, ensuring something satisfying for each meal. A filling meal will help prevent cravings in between. If you’re not following a specific diet, simply rule out certain items, such as sugar, dairy products, fried foods or desserts, while still catering for enjoyment and that essential full feeling. Make sure your meals are worth building an appetite for.

Use a modest-sized plate or dish and don’t overfill it; you might leave a gap around the rim or only fill the dish to a certain point or height. Prepare exactly one portion, so you won’t be tempted by leftovers.

Keeping to your plans

Once you’ve set your dietary rules, you’ll face the challenge of sticking to them, but with this method, every small success is a step forward. The longer and more evenly you can keep to your system, the easier you’ll find it. As your body and mindset adapt, your arrangements will become more like handy signposts than rules. You’ll start to feel hungry only at the right times, and if you do suffer a hunger pang, you’ll be helped through by the knowledge that you have a good meal scheduled not too far ahead.

If people around you are snacking and you want to join in, a raw carrot or celery stick will serve well, while letting you set a good example to other would-be slimmers. A full, busy day will help you along between meals by making the time go faster and keeping your mind off your stomach.

Drinking patterns

Some drinks are more fattening than they look. If in doubt, you can check the calorie content marked on the bottle or can, or consult friends, a vendor or waiter, as applicable. A sugar-free version of your favorite beverage, or a calorie-free black coffee, tea or herbal diffusion, can be enjoyable and invigorating.

Shopping patterns

Shape your shopping to fit your dietary routines. For example, if you’re cutting out cream, don’t buy any. If you’re shopping for a dinner party, buy food for dishes that don’t require cream, rather than putting temptation in your own way. You may be doing your guests a favor too.

Shop after eating, to guard against temptations, and restrict your grocery choices to your needs. This may be a tall order when you’re passing all sorts of delicacies, but you can help yourself by taking a shopping list and just enough money to cover the costs. You could also promise yourself a modest, diet-safe reward for success.

Exercise patterns

Support your eating plan with physical exercise. This will speed up weight loss while also toning up muscles and strengthening your heart and lungs. Whenever possible, travel by foot or bicycle, and try not to sit for too long at a time. Sports and other active pastimes, such as gardening or dancing, will also help. The more pride you take in your body, the less tempted you’ll be to overload it with food.

You probably have a number of habits and customs in your life already, so it will be easy to take on one or two more. Once a routine is in place, it goes against the grain to break it, especially when it’s doing you good. If you do waver, though, just take a peek in the looking-glass to see your success story in the making — but don’t gaze too long, or you’ll be late for dinner!

Drinking Sufficient Water Is Important.

Understanding that water constitutes 65% of your overall body weight should be reason enough to keep downing those eight 8oz glasses of water daily. Having enough water on board becomes even more important when you realize that your brain is composed of 70% water, your blood is 80% water and your lungs are 90% water. An adequate amount of daily fluid intake is necessary for body systems to work normally or to even keep working at all.

Drinking Enough Water is Essential

Water is essential for all functions in your body. It dissolves and carries nutrients to your cells, maintains the proper balance of chemicals in and around those cells and collects waste products to be excreted from the body. Water is always being removed from your body by processes such as sweating, digestion and waste elimination so it is important to have it replenished on a consistent basis.

All of the fluid in your body is provided by what you drink and the foods you eat. The common recommendation is to drink 48 ounces of water per day. Most people don’t realize that many solid foods are also a significant source of water. Fruits and vegetables can contain up to 90% water and meats contain over 50% water. It’s not all good news about food and fluid intake though. Some of what you take in will actually reduce fluid levels rather than increase them. Substances such as the caffeine in coffee act as diuretics and stimulate the body to remove water in the form of urine.

Signs Of Dehydration.

Dehydration in simple terms is a condition that occurs when the body does not have enough fluids. This condition can develop gradually or rather suddenly. It can be the result of lack of sufficient water intake because of poor hydration habits or it can result from excessive loss of of water due to factors such as diarrhea, vomiting or strenuous exercise. Symptoms of dehydration run the gamut from inconvenient and uncomfortable to serious and life threatening. Common signs of dehydration are listed below.

  • Urine output will be decreased and will likely be darker in color and have a stronger odor.
  • A pinched fold of skin on the back of the hand will not quickly return back to its original position because moisture is needed for elasticity.
  • Your mouth may feel dry or sticky because fluids get conserved and sent to vital organs.
  • Your eyes may feel itchy and scratchy because moisture is not replenished.
  • Your joints may feel stiff and ache because lubrication is decreased.
  • Muscle cramps may occur due to electrolyte imbalances related to reduced fluids or due to decreases in sodium levels from excessive perspiration.
  • A dehydrated brain may lead to confusion, irritability, dizziness, fatigue and headaches.
  • Fluctuations in blood pressure may occur. As blood volume is reduced blood pressure drops. The body then compensates by producing chemicals that constrict blood vessels thereby causing a rebound rise in blood pressure.

Populations At Risk For Dehydration.

Children and babies can become dehydrated very quickly, especially when ill. This is because their bodies actually have a higher percentage of water as body weight and they metabolize electrolytes more rapidly. Seniors often have a reduced sense of thirst, less ability to conserve water and are more likely to be on medication such as a diuretic that effects fluid levels. Dehydration is the most frequent reason why seniors are hospitalized. Individuals with chronic illnesses such as kidney disease, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, alcoholism and adrenal gland disorders are at higher risk as well. And finally, people who live in high altitudes (>8,000ft) have increased risk because of the way the body adapts to altitude by increasing urine output and increasing respiration (breathing) rate.

Too Much Of A Good Thing.

Your body can only absorb about one quart of fluid per hour. Drinking excessive amounts of water in a short period of time is not only inefficient, it can be counterproductive or dangerous. Water intoxication occurs when there is too much fluid in the cells and tissues of the body. This can be the result of drinking too much water, kidney dysfunction or insufficient elimination of water. Water intoxication can be serious and may result in swelling, confusion, seizures and even death. College students have been known to die due to being forced to drink excessive amounts of water during initiation rites.

Tips For Keeping Hydrated.

  • Do start drinking water early in the day. It is a quick energizer and starts the habit for the day.
  • Do drink steadily throughout the day. Large consumption of water is inefficient. The body can only absorb about one quart of water per hour.
  • Do adjust your water intake for special circumstances that may decrease hydration such as sweating during hot days, physical labor or strenuous exercise.
  • Do drink plenty of water after a massage as toxins can be released and need to be flushed from your system.
  • Don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink. By the time you feel thirsty you are already in the early stages of dehydration.
  • Don’t drink a lot of coffee or caffeinated sodas. They act as diuretics and remove more fluid than they provide.
  • Don’t drink excessive amounts of water. Even drinking two gallons of water in a day can begin to flush out needed substances like vitamins and minerals. Rapid excessive water intake can also lead to water intoxication resulting in confusion, seizures or even death.

Water is the all-important elixir that keeps your body alive. You may be able to live up to 30 days without food but you will only survive 3 to 5 days without water. Your body uses water for almost every function from dissolving and transporting valuable nutrients to keeping you free from toxins by getting rid of the waste products that your body does not need. So do yourself a favor, fill up that glass and begin the healthy habit of consuming eight glasses of water a day.

You will have heard much over recent years in the press regarding the importance of drinking plenty of water and the effects that dehydration can have on the body. Water accounts for approximately two thirds of the weight of a healthy human and it is this high water content which must be replenished, as it is lost through sweating, urinating and breathing. There are also chemical reactions occurring in the body all the time and these reactions require water in order to work efficiently.

Health Benefits of Drinking Water

Basic Body Functions

The most basic of functions within the body are entirely reliant on water. Without a sufficient supply, the blood would be unable to carry vital nutrients to the organs. Also, water is a key component in the body’s ability to process waste. Thirst is a serious warning sign from the brain, which indicates that fluid is required urgently. The brain communicates with the kidneys via the Posterior Pituitary gland – it will send signals to the kidneys about how much urine should be excreted and how much is to be stored in reserve.

So How Much Water?

How much water we should drink on a daily basis has been the cause of much debate, but the official recommendation from the Department of Health is 1.2 litres per day. There has been a figure banded about, that we should consume 2.5 litres per day, but this is a confused figure, as it relates to total fluid loss per day and our total replacement requirements. It does not follow that we should take on board the full replacement requirement in the form of drinking, as approximately 1 litre of fluid is recovered from food and a further 0.3 litres from chemical reactions. This is where the 1.2 litres per day figure comes from. To put this into context, that is 8 glasses of water, assuming that each glass holds 150ml.

Muscle Fatigue

The health benefits of drinking water are more far reaching than is often stated. Muscle fatigue can result from an inadequate water intake, as muscles shrivel due to an imbalance of fluid and electrolytes. There is also evidence to suggest that healthy skin can be promoted by staying properly hydrated. Your kidneys will benefit from a good supply of water, as it minimises the amount of work they are forced to do in order to process waste. A plentiful supply of water also results in the easy flow of waste through the system, as the kidneys are not forced to withhold fluid from the urine.

Hydration for the Body

Further claims abound regarding the advantages of proper hydration for the body. Dehydration has been linked to heartburn, arthritis, back pain, angina, migraines, colitis, asthma and hypertension, to name but a few. The reality is that the human body is a water-based machine. Water is the lubrication and the fuel and without an intake which compensates for the natural losses experienced day to day, the machine cannot function successfully and will eventually break down.
